Mercedes top comments ahead of F1 Mexico GP: The fight to the last tire

The atmosphere on the eve of the F1 Mexico GP is charged not only with a racing fiesta, but also with the spirit of a real battle. As the end of the Formula One season approaches, emotions are heating up. Red Bull is a clear favorite among fans here with Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen. Unlike them, however, Mercedes, led by Toto Wolff, makes it clear that Lewis Hamilton will fight to the last tire, no matter what it costs! We’ve collected the trendiest commentary ahead of Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix.

Rob Smedley, Formula One’s Director of Data Systems, speaks candidly on the F1 Nation podcast. Well, with identical cars, he would still be supporting Lewis at this point. Although the popular former race engineer is not unequivocal about the Formula 1 team.

Lewis Hamilton vs Max Verstappen – Rob Smedley’s thoughts.

“I’ve got to go with Lewis, because he’s done it seven times before,
“Now, that’s not to take anything away from Max, because Max is a once in a generation talent, but I think that Lewis has learned more of his craft than Max – just like anybody, he’s just been doing it longer than Max.
“He’s done it seven times before, so if they were in identical cars with identical tyres and all the rest of it for the five remaining races, I would still back Lewis at this point in time.
“If I was going to go for car, I would go for the Red Bull,
“I think it’s a slightly better car and it has been a better car all season.”

It looks like the battle is going to be very serious, there are only twelve points between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, Max is still the leader. Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolff is only adding fuel to the fire ahead of the F1 Mexico GP.

A double podium finish at the Circuit of the Americas for Red Bull reduced Mercedes “lead in the constructors” championship from 36 to 23. Both teams have the enormous support. In addition, the mentally Red Bull F1 team is stronger. Christian Horner does not talk too much to the press and avoids weighty statements. Toto Wolff, however, pursues the exact opposite.

Toto Wolff has made it clear that nothing is impossible for Mercedes.

“Mexico was traditionally a track that was difficult for us, but this season everything can change.
“I think it’s really race-by-race and [we need to] keep the spirits up.
“I think the morale is high. We are right there, we can win every race. It’s about avoiding the DNFs – they are the killers.
“It’s good fun for everybody. There is pressure, but it’s positive pressure.”

Before the F1 Mexico GP Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff gave the big interview to DailyMail. Despite the very nervous atmosphere throughout the Formula 1 championship. Toto Wolff seems very calm. He also spoke about the drivers, do not forget to mention Fernando Alonso. In the interview, Mercedes boss gently hinted that Lewis Hamilton is a greatest driver who knows what to do and how to do it best.

Toto Wolff on the Formula 1 drivers.

Toto Wolff

“The people who say they could be world champions in Lewis’ car — well, why aren’t you in that car? Why did he switch from McLaren to Mercedes in 2013? It was a bold move. There are examples, even now, people who went for the money rather than the car.
“Fernando Alonso is without doubt one of the best Formula 1 drivers to have raced. Ever. It is disappointing for the sport that he hasn’t got more than two titles to his name. But it’s about knowing that you’re part of the solar system, you’re not the sun.
“Some drivers are ill-advised, they get in the media spotlight and they start to believe they’re the sun. And you’re not. None of us are. We’re all satellites, we’re the planets that rotate.”

What we love about Toto Wolff is that sometimes his words can go off the rails like a lightning bolt and end up hitting the point. So, instead of Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, it would be wise to be cautious.

Toto Wolff on Lewis Hamilton ahead F1 Mexico GP.

If it was to come to the scenario of the last race in Abu Dhabi and they were to be racing each other for the title, whoever is in front [on points] is absolutely going to try to do the same as in the Senna-Prost years..”

Toto Wolff and Mercedes F1

In order to somehow defuse the anticipated tension, Toto Wolff prepared himself in advance for a possible development of events. It is worth mentioning that Red Bull thinks much easier and thereby wins even more F1 fans. Max Verstappen was not a champion and in the event of a mistake his failure is not so terrible.

Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, is claiming his eighth Formula 1 championship title. To not let emotions get the better of him is an unacceptable thing that can happen, as Toto Wolff warns against. Red Bull have a stronger bond with the drivers. Verstappen and Mexican driver Sergio Perez are both interested in double wins and victories. At the same time, Valtteri Bottas will switch to Alfa Romeo next year and is already mentally preparing for the 2022 Formula 1 season. But, who knows, maybe the Mexican GP will change priorities?
