Red Bull drivers Imola

Red Bull drivers enjoy the first double podium at Ferrari’s home Imola GP

Scuderia Ferrari drivers were the main characters at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez came to Imola as supporting characters, while Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have been basking in the glow of victory, but too early. The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix reshaped the 2022 season.

The race in Imola, or rather the first part of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2022, turned out to be poor for spectacular overtaking. Despite the rain that had been drizzling from time to time, there was no salt of racing at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. All the drivers preferred not to take risks and kept the usual high-speed pace. At that moment, everything seemed to point to the Imola race finishing as it was, but something turned out wrong.

Scuderia Ferrari’ unfortunate mistakes on Emilia Romagna GP 2022

Imola Grand Prix: Carlos Sainz’s weekend to forget.

Despite the disaster of the Australian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz doesn’t give up and keeps protecting the Prancing Horse team against Red Bull drivers. However, the blue patch continued over the Italian weekend for the Spanish driver. Emilia Romagna GP Qualifying finished for Carlos Sainz before the end, as he crashed out in Q2. As for Sunday’s race, the Scuderia Ferrari driver didn’t even race. Sainz involved in the accident with Mclaren’s Daniel Ricciardo. Being rainy, the circuit’s cover was very slippery and Ricciardo had no chance to rule it out. Both spun out of the race.

Charles Leclerc’s too greedy

There is always a chance for rain to end eventually, and Red Bull drivers noticed that the Imola racetrack was getting dry, or – available for the soft tires as non-forecasters put it. Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc were the first to reach the pits. Max Verstappen followed the same path on the lap after. Rushing to take the lead, P3 Charles Leclerc pushes hard on the Red Bull driver and makes a devastating mistake. Having spun out of third place, Leclerc drops out of the top 5. Next lap he will turn into the pit to check the car and change the tires. Emilia Romagna Charles Leclerc finished in 6th place. After the race, Monegasque commented – “I was too greedy”.

Difficult to argue, but there will be another chance after two weeks. Charles Leclerc keeps the lead drivers standings with the advantage at 27 points.

Red Bull drivers standings

Red Bull drivers take luck into their own hands at Imola.

Max Verstappen wins the grand slam in Emilia Romagna 2022.

Verstappen’s Italian weekend was also covered with issues, but the Red Bull driver’s greatest strength is that he remained calm.

The youngest F1 world champion took the most points at Imola – 34 points (8 points for F1 sprint’ victory, and 26 points as the winner of the race). Dutch is moving up in the drivers’ standings to second place.

As Max Verstappen won pole, victory, fastest lap and led every lap, he took the first grand slam win in F1 history. This is where a driver has taken P1 on the grid twice on the same weekend. But this is not the first record for Red Bull. The team had never previously scored with both F1 cars at Imola until this day.

Today is also the first time in F1 history that there have been consecutive grand slams for different constructors/drivers. Previously, Charles Leclerc won last time out for Ferrari in Australia from pole, taking the fastest lap and leading every lap.

Sergio Perez keeps Red Bull on top.

Sergio Perez did everything that the team needed at the Imola Grand Prix. Despite that last corner mistake that cost Perez the pole, Sergio already knew that the weather would play a key role in Sunday’s race. Because of this, he made an amazing starting reaction and overtook Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc immediately. The crucial battle became apparent after the first pit stop, when Sergio Perez overtook Leclerc again.

McLaren driver Lando Norris is another main character in Emilia Romagna. Norris qualified on pole and finished Imola’s race in third place.

Summing up, Red Bull drivers surprised F1 fans and outperformed the Scuderia Ferrari drivers in their home race. Partly, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were faster at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Compared with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, Red Bull drivers made fewer mistakes and were more circumspect.

One thing definitely makes F1 fans happy. This is because F1 season 2022 becomes even more exciting as this is the first time we have had two different teams win the grand slam in a row.

Considering that the next racing circuit is entirely new, the next race will be absolutely breathtaking. We will go to the Miami Grand Prix for unforgettable experiences on 6th – 8th May.
